Re. Options for Carrickmines Castle

Dear Mr. O’Hare,

I enclose a list of options for addressing the ongoing difficulties at the Carrickmines Castle site, ranging from what I consider to be the best option (number 1) to the worst option (number 9).

BEST

1. Revert to the 1993 Dublin County Development Plan for the Motorway in the vicinity of the Castle Complex. This involves moving the motorway carriageways approximately 50 metres further south from their present location. Remove the major intersection at Carrickmines. Use existing Ballyogan road with a new signal-controlled junction to allow traffic to travel between Cornelscourt / Foxrock and Kilternan. This is similar to the proposal put forward by Stephen Devaney. It may require the purchase of additional lands, as well as a re-design of the junctions.

2. Remove the major intersection at Carrickmines, and re-design /simplify
junction accordingly.

3. Move the link road that connects the two roundabouts on the east side of the motorway further north towards the stream; remove the major roundabout that lies partially on the Castle's outer walls; and remove the southbound on-ramp to the motorway.

4. Remove the major roundabout that lies partially on the Castle's outer walls
and remove the southbound on-ramp to the motorway.

5. Remove the major roundabout that lies partially on the Castle's outer walls
and provide a signal-controlled junction at the junction with the southbound
on-ramp to the motorway and the Glenamuck road and the new link road.

6. Significantly reduce the diameter of the major roundabout and move it to
eastwards.

7. Elevate the roundabout as per Minister Brennan's proposals and significantly reduce the diameter of the major roundabout

8. Elevate the roundabout as per Minister Brennan's proposals

9. Do nothing option. (Proceed with plans previously proposed)

WORST

I hope at this late stage you would consider making changes in the road layout in order to safeguard this important archaeological site.

Sincerely,

Ciarán Cuffe TD
