Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown Waste:

Waste charge information for Dún Laoghaire

Links to: Introduction, Ballyogan Recycling Park, Bring banks in your area, Composting, Waiver Scheme, Waste Charges  What happens to your waste?

Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council has now moved away from a flat charge of €300 a year to a new system based on an annual standing charge of €80, a €4 charge per lift and a twenty five cent charge per kilogramme of waste placed in the grey bin.

If you put out a fairly full bin every week you'll end up paying around €500 a year. Reduce to once a fortnight and it'll be around €300. If you only put out your bin every three weeks it should be possible to reduce your costs to €200 a year.

There is no charge currently for the green recycling bin which is collected once a month. Around 1000 householders in the County are still on a bag collection, and they will be charged €350 a year. The main landfill at Ballyogan is closing in early 2005, and the contents of the grey bins will be trucked out to a new landfill in Co. Kildare.

We welcome the changes, but remain concerned that increased charges are being passed onto the householder directly without any real transparency in the costs.

Although the Green Party has four councillors on Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council we're not in the ruling group, but if we were we'd consider the following changes:

Changes the Green Party would like to see in Waste Management in Dún Laoghaire

-An end to paying in demanding payment in advance of waste charges. If the ESB did this there would be uproar!

-Tag-a-bag for householders that still receive a bag collection at €2.50 a bag, rather than a flat charge of €350 a year

-A massive increase in the amount of Bring Centres in the county so that all neighbourhoods would have recycling within walking distance

-The reintroduction of full recycling facilities in the town Dún Laoghaire to replace the facility that was removed when the Council sold off the site at the back of 'Iceland' off Georges Street
