Policy

It is now clear that the Earth is in the grips of dramatic weather changes and that global warming is occurring at levels far greater than predicted. It is also clear that the Irish Government is in the grips of inertia in its response. The Government has produced a National Climate Change Strategy document, which is full of generalisations and aspirations. The Green Party is very definite in its commitments and will introduce a carbon tax on the industrial uses of energy, ensure fuel tax is spent on public transport and other energy conservation measures and ensure that some of the monies from eco-taxes are directed to measures to counteract the effects of climate change. We promote wind, wave, biomass and solar energy and set a target of 20% of electricity production through renewable resources by 2010.
