Policy

Successive governments have failed in their basic duty to provide adequate accommodation for Ireland's people. New house prices have risen by over 80% during the present Government's term of office.  Local authority housing lists have expanded to nearly 60,000 as the building output for Council and other social housing falls further behind. There are currently 3386 applicants waiting for a local authority house in Dún Laoghaire Rathdown alone. The number of homeless has nearly doubled to 5,000 nationally.

In government the Green Party would establish a Housing Authority, whose objective will be to shape and influence the development of national housing policy. Ensure public investment in social and affordable housing. Commit to ensuring the provision of 10,000 social housing units per year. Give pre-emptive rights to local authorities to purchase property at point of sale. Ensure that local authorities will ordinarily compulsorily purchase development land prior to rezoning, at agricultural or existing use value plus 25%.
