Policy |
Dublin's waste problems have reached crisis proportions. The problem stems from years of neglect and reliance on a waste
technology which consisted of digging big holes and filling them with rubbish. Alternative waste management solutions such as re-cycling and the elimination of waste at its source have been grossly neglected.
The Green Party policy for Waste Management is based on the Polluter-Pays and the
Waste Not Pay Not²principals based on the action sequence of Waste Prevention, Reduction,
Re-use, Recycling and Environmentally Sustainable Storage, without incineration or Superdumps.
The Green Party will set a national target of 50% waste reduction by 2005 and employ Zero Waste Targets by 2020. We will develop and implement a New National Waste Management Strategy legislation to focus on applying financial incentives for consumers recycling or returning goods while providing tax-incentives to manufacturers to drastically reduce their usage of non-recyclable, non-compostable materials.
