September 2001 PRESS RELEASE GREEN
PARTY CALLS FOR COMPOST BIN CAMPAIGN
IN DUN LAOGHAIRE RATHDOWN
The
Green Party has called on Dún Laoghaire Rathdown Council to encourage more
people to compost and thus reduce the amount of waste going to landfill. “We
need a BIMBY (bin in my back yard) policy in Dún Laoghaire” stated Councillor
Ciarán Cuffe of the Green Party today. How is it that Louth County Council has
supplied over 2000 compost bins to the public but in Dún Laoghaire only 300
bins have been supplied?” The
Green Party has written to County Manager Derek Brady calling on him to launch a
compost bin campaign. “We
have to reduce the amount of waste we produce if we are to avoid building
incinerators. Composting is a way of reducing household waste by up to 30%. “We
want Dún Laoghaire Rathdown Council to set a good example by encouraging more
householders to start composting.
One practical step is to supply more composting bins at a reduced price to
householders. A modern plastic compost bin is a tidy, clean, fashionable item to
have in the garden, and only requires a small space to work. “Even
Arranmore Island in Donegal was supplied with 220 bins by Donegal County
Council, so surely Dún Laoghaire could make more of an effort.” ENDS contact: |
