GREENS
CALL FOR NEW
FARMERS’
MARKET FOR DÚN LAOGHAIRE
The
Green Party has written to the Dún Laoghaire County Manager Mr. Derek Brady
urging him to set up a street market in Dún Laoghaire. In the light of the
success of the Temple Bar market in Dublin and the Galway Farmers’ Market, it
feels the time is now ripe for a good quality outdoor market in the centre of
Dún Laoghaire.
“Almost
all French and English towns have successful farmer’s markets in their town
centres” pointed out Ciarán Cuffe of the Green Party. “We feel this is a
good project that could compliment the environmental upgrading of the town
centre.
“This
could be a great way of getting fresh produce straight from the farmer and
producer to the consumer. I would love to carry out some of my weekly shopping
at a market, instead of in a supermarket.
“The
Temple Bar market in Dublin and the Galway Farmers’ Market are successful
modern retail outlets in an outdoor setting. Why not Dún Laoghaire?
“Such
a Market could accommodate perhaps a dozen traders; be open on a couple of days
a week, and sell fresh produce out of doors. It could concentrate on fresh
natural healthy food. If successful the idea could spread to Shankill, Bray or
Blackrock.
“The
Council should take a lead and consider a location, as well as supplying stalls
and promoting the idea throughout the County.
