GREEN
PARTY CALLS FOR MORE PEDESTRIANISATION IN DÚN LAOGHAIRE
The
Green Party has called on Dún Laoghaire Rathdown Council to extend the
pedestrianisation of Dún Laoghaire. In a submission to the Council it has
called for all of Lower Georges Street to be designated as a pedestrianised
area.
“We
need more car free areas, “ stated Ciarán Cuffe of the Green Party. “We all
want some respite from the noise and traffic. The existing pedestrianised area
is working quite well, although there have been some teething problems with the
rough cobbles. I am sure that these difficulties can be eliminated in the next
phase.
“We
will need still require access for commercial vehicles, and local residents, but
in overall terms more car-free areas are the way ahead. We can then truly claim
to have a ‘Dún Laoghaire Riviera.’
The
Green Party has written to the Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Manager urging him
to continue with the pedestrianisation plans.
Mr.
Cuffe has urged the County Manager to make Lower Georges Street car-free from
West of Patrick Street junction to the East of Convent Road junction, and from
immediately West of Sussex Street junction to the East of the junction at
Convent Lane with Georges Street Lower.
Submissions
are invited from the public to the Council on their Traffic Management Plan up
until the 17th May 2002
