Green
Party calls for public uses in Dún Laoghaire Carlisle Pier Plans
The
Green Party has welcomed the short-listing of entries in the competition for
development at the Carlisle Pier in Dún Laoghaire. However the Party has
expressed concern that the final plans may be dominated by commercial
development.
“We’re
concerned that the final proposal may be too big for the location, and that the
cultural activities will be dwarfed by the commercial aspect of the scheme”,
stated local Green Party TD Ciarán Cuffe.
“As an
architect I’m impressed by the design quality of some of the entries, but
I’m also aware of the need to respect the existing town. I would hate to see
the centre of Dún Laoghaire being dominated by an overblown project.
“We
got it wrong with the shopping centre in the 1970’s. Let’s ensure that we
don’t repeat the same mistake by seeing anything new as being positive. I hope
that the Dún Laoghaire Harbour Company will ensure that the winner will respect
the town’s heritage and contain amenities that are available to all.”
