CUFFE CALLS
FOR LAND HOARDING TAX TO TACKLE SOARING HOUSE PRICES
The Green Party has called on the Government to
introduce a tax on housing land in order to tackle soaring house prices. The tax
would be levied annually on land that is zoned for housing, but remains
undeveloped.
“Hundreds of acres of land are being hoarded by
developers in the greater Dublin Area”, stated Green Party Housing
Spokesperson Ciarán Cuffe today. We need to make these developers build homes
instead of hoarding their land banks.
“The Oireachtas Report on Property Rights that was
issued this week has many good recommendations for improving housing
affordability. One of the proposals contained in that report and proposed by the
Green Party is to tax housing land that remains undeveloped. This would force
developers to ‘put up or shut up’.
“We now want the Government to act swiftly on foot of
that Report and introduce measures that will make increase housing supply. It is
now time for action, not words." ENDS
