July 2004 PRESS RELEASE Green
Party calls for policing improvements as personal crime doubles in five years The
Green Party has called on the Minister for Justice to address the rise in thefts
and assaults over the last five years. Figures released today by the Central
Statistics Office indicate a sharp increase in the level of personal crime
between 1998 and 2003. “The
figures show a disturbing increase in crime in the new commuter towns outside of
Dublin”, stated Ciarán Cuffe TD, the Green Party’s Justice
Spokesperson. “I am not convinced
that Garda numbers are keeping pace with population increases in these areas. “The
Government’s failure to provide 2000 extra Gardai is an indictment of a
Minister who preaches Law and Order. However it is more than a numbers issues.
The Gardai require technology and specialised staffing so that can tackle those
committing these crimes. “The
Government must also ensure that the marginalised neighbourhoods that are
breeding grounds for criminality receive more resources from the State. This
will help to stop young people from turning away from society to a life of
crime. “Chief
Superintendents should be held responsible for reducing crime within their
jurisdiction. If they don’t deliver the goods they should be demoted. “The
Divisional Policing Plans should be scrapped and rewritten. They are little more
than a cut-and-paste exercise for each county and are neither innovative nor
responsive to increases in crime levels.” ENDS |
