Planning
changes ‘a mixed bag’ - says Green Party
The
Green Party has welcomed some of the changes in Planning Regulations proposed
today by the Department of the Environment. Green
Party Planning spokesperson Ciarán Cuffe TD,
said that, “We’re delighted with the proposal for a uniform planning
application form, and with some of the procedural changes. However, we’re
concerned at some of the new proposals.” “It
is inappropriate that the Minister for the Environment should get involved in
the making of Local Area Plans. These matters are best left to the individual
Planning Authority, with guidance from the Department of the Environment. There
is a danger of political influence in the detail of such plans.” “Minister
Cullen also intends to give more latitude to Planning Authorities in the
publication of Planning Lists. This is a negative step, as there is often not
enough time for the public to make their views known on controversial Planning
Applications. This change will reduce the amount of time available. The Minister
should instead ensure that all County Councils adhere to the existing
regulations.” “Finally, we welcome the
proposal to allow more planning functions to be carried out online. However, in
order for this to happen, the Minister will have to make available additional
financial and staff resources to Planning Authorities, and there is no sign of
this in today’s announcement,” concluded Deputy Cuffe. |
