11th October 2004 Press Release Green Party says Climate Change requires policy changes as CO2 levels soar The Green Party has called on the Irish Government to reconsider a tax on climate change emissions as new figures suggest that climate change is increasing dramatically. The figures reported in today’s Guardian newspaper say that levels of Carbon Dioxide measured at an observatory in Hawaii have shown a sharp rise in the last two years. Ciarán Cuffe TD, the Green Party’s Environment spokesperson stated: “The Irish Government has turned its back to the climate change issue. Instead of abandoning a tax on fossil fuels they should explore new ways to encourage energy conservation. “Higher standards of building insulation, more support for public transport and tax breaks for wind energy are also part of the solution.” “Good environmental policies can encourage enterprise and innovation and create jobs” he concluded.
