Minister Ahern guilty of ‘Fuzzy Maths’ on housing figures The Green Party has accused the Minister for State at the Department of the Environment of ‘fuzzy maths’ over the latest release of housing figures. The
Party stated that the figures released gave no breakdown of the type of housing
provided, and that targets for the provision of Social Housing had not been met. The
Green Party’s Housing Spokesperson Ciarán Cuffe TD stated: “While the
housing output of 77,000 units last year may be good news to builders, it
provides little comfort to the tens of thousands of families on Local Authority
housing waiting lists. The figures do not show a breakdown of private and public
housing completions for last year and represent ‘fuzzy maths’ on the
Minister’s behalf. “The
Government has failed to reach the National Development Plan targets for social
housing. That Plan promised 5000 Local Authority, and 4000 Voluntary Housing
completions a year. “Minister
Ahern is not doing his job right if these targets are not being met. It is time
for him to stop trumpeting the numbers of housing units completed and to start
reducing the numbers on the housing lists. “Over
90% of the housing completions were private houses. Thousands of those are
holiday homes in receipt of tax incentives. It is time for Minister Ahern to get
back to basics and assist those most in need of housing. ENDS
