| Green Party Call for Higher Recycling Targets in Dublin Waste Plan
The Green Party has said the new Dublin Waste Plan doesn’t do enough for recycling. The new Draft Plan published today contains plans to build an incinerator at Ringsend on Dublin Bay.
Green Party Environment Spokesperson Ciarán Cuffe stated.
“The figures speak for themselves: €30 million on recycling and €300 million on new dumps and incinerators.
" Instead of spending the bulk of the money on incineration, we want the local authorities to invest more in waste reduction, re-use and recycling.
Higher targets for recycling are required.
“There’s massive public support for recycling. People are queuing up in their cars at the recycling facilities that have been provided. Recycling infrastructure is lagging behind public demand.
“We’d like to see a network of Resource Recovery Parks put in place around Dublin so that businesses as well as householders could re-use each others waste.
“We also want to see Industry pay their fare share for waste disposal. Making consumers pay is an end-of-pipe solution that doesn’t place enough pressure on companies to reduce their packaging. Repak should pay more towards recycling.”
