Responding
to Minister of Justice Michael McDowell’s announcement this afternoon that An
Garda Síochána have launched Operation Anvil aimed at those involved in gun
crime in Dublin, Green Party spokesperson on Justice Ciarán Cuffe, TD said:
“I
welcome any initiative aimed at reducing crime, especially gun crime in Dublin.
However, I am worried that will divert other Gardaí from street patrols and
community policing. Paying members of the Gardaí such large amounts of overtime
may result in consuming resources that would be better allocated elsewhere.
“Minister
McDowell today in the Dáil expressed concern about Prison Officers’ overtime
consuming resources that could be better spent elsewhere. Yet now he appears to
be galloping down the same road with Gardai overtime.”
