Party Calls for Action on Eroding Dump on Dun Laoghaire Side of Bray
The Green Party has called on
the Minister for the Environment to take action over the old Bray Dump that is
slipping into the sea through coastal erosion.
A Green Party delegation
consisting of Dún Laoghaire TD Ciarán Cuffe, Councillor Tom Kivlehan of Dún
Laoghaire Rathdown County Council and Cllr. Ciaran O’Brien of Bray Town
Council visited the site recently to view the damage first hand and have
expressed concern at the extent of the damage.
Ciarán Cuffe TD stated:
“We were taken aback at the extent of the erosion. Large sections of the old
sea wall have crumbled into the sea, exposing the dump in several places. Both
the Minister for the Environment and the County Councils need to take action on
the issue. I have tabled question to both Minister
for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government Dick Roche TD and the
Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources Noel Dempsey asking
them to investigate the issue further.
Councillor Tom Kivlehan
added: “The Councils also have to face up to their responsibilities. I raised
the issue at the May County Council Meeting and was told that there are
insufficient funds to carry out work to the dump. We need to clarify who owns
the land and take action to clean up the area
Councillor Ciaran O’Brien
added: “The first step is to determine the amount of pollution that is
leaching out from the dump. We then need to take steps to remediate the site and
protect it from further erosion.”
