Sellafield
to close partially due to leak
Nuclear
power is a dangerous and outdated technology for the 21st century say
the Greens
Sellafield
could remain closed for months as a result of a recent leak at the nuclear
processing plant, according to reports today. The leak, which was discovered in
April, had gone undetected for up to eight months.
Green
Party Environment spokesperson Ciaran Cuffe TD
said today that, “The problems at Sellafield only serve to underline that
nuclear power is a dangerous, expensive and outdated technology for the 21st
century.”
“The
Green Party is calling on Minister Roche to visit the THORP plant in Sellafield
and express his concerns directly to the plant management.”
“Yet
again the Irish Government should be providing support for alternatives energy
sources to nuclear power such as wave, wind and biomass,” concluded Deputy
Cuffe.
