Greens call for an end to car parking at Blackrock Statue.

Ciarán Cuffe has called on the Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council to ensure that the parking of cars, which  obscuring Rowan Gillespie's 'Blackrock Dolmen' be stopped. He has also called on the County Council to make environmental improvements to the area.

The Green Party has called on Maxwell Motors to stop parking cars on a pedestrian island in front of Rowan Gillespie’s ‘Blackrock Dolmen’ statue in Blackrock. The cars are obscuring the view of the statue. It has also called on the County Council to make environmental improvements to the area.

Local TD Ciarán Cuffe says that parking cars so close to a piece of public sculpture takes away from the character of the town of Blackrock.

Cuffe states: “I have written to Maxwell Motors and also to the County Manager about the issue. Ideally I would like to see a well-maintained piece of green landscaping surrounding the statue.

“The Statue is one of Rowan Gillespie’s finest works and was commissioned by Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council back in 1987. It’s a shame to see the area surrounding the statue being turned into a car sales lot.

“It’s the little things like this that take away from the character of a neighbourhood. The cars also obstruct the view of the Blackrock Bypass from cars heading south from Blackrock, and could be a traffic hazard.”

Cuffe took the opportunity to speak with staff at Maxwell Motors last week who immediately started to move the offending cars off the pedestrian island. “Perhaps this marks a change of heart by Maxwell Motors. Maybe they might even be persuaded to make a contribution towards landscaping the area.”
