PRESS RELEASE

Green Party Call for Proper Planning at Dun Laoghaire Baths Rally

The Green Party has congratulated the organisers of the ‘Save our Seafront’ Rally and concert that was held at Newtownsmith in Dun Laoghaire on Sunday 18 September 2005.

Up to 4,000 people attended the event. Christy Moore headlined the concert and Ronnie Drew also performed at the event as well as several local bands.

Local TD and Green Party Environment spokesperson Ciarán Cuffe TD stated:

“This was a fantastic display of people power in action. It is now time that Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Council changes its mind and drops this crazy plan for an enormous building on the site of the old Dun Laoghaire Baths.

“This is also a good time to look carefully at the future of Dun Laoghaire as the Consortium that had proposed to build on the Carlisle Pier in the heart of Dun Laoghaire have had their plans put on hold.

Now is a good time to ensure that new building proposals protect the
heritage and character of the town.

Dun Laoghaire Councillor Kealin Ireland added:

'The number of people at the rally is a clear indication of the public's views on the plans for the Baths. 14,000 people have signed a petition indicating their concern at the proposals. Following the public display of the proposals in the Town Hall, 83% of those who made submissions to the Council were against all or some of the plans. These figures; these views, can't just be ignored.

“The Council has to listen and take account of public opinion. Go back to the drawing board. Start again - letting the words 'modest' and 'publicly accessible' guide the planners this time.'
