The Green Party has called on Garda
Commissioner Noel Conroy to explain the flaws in Garda intelligence
that contributed to the policing difficulties in Dublin yesterday.
Green Party Justice spokesperson
Ciarán Cuffe TD stated:
"We shouldn't see members of the force put at risk due to a lack of
resources. Senior Gardaí should have known where the potential
trouble spots would be and prepared accordingly.
"Republican Sinn Fein had voiced
concerns about violence in advance of the march, and information was
available to suggest that violence would occur. There was a wealth
of information available on the web in the days prior to the march,
and on the streets yesterday morning which suggested that violence
might occur.
"A Garda inquiry is essential to
address what went wrong and to be better prepared in future.
Thankfully it appears that no-one was seriously injured yesterday.
"Given that thousands of Gardaí
have policed previous demonstrations in recent years it seems
curious to say the least that less than 300 members of the force
were on duty to police yesterday's march. |
