Speaking in the Dáil last night
in a debate with the Minister for Justice Michael McDowell, the
Green Party’s Justice spokesperson Ciarán Cuffe TD called on the
Minister either to meet with the men or facilitate a process of
discussion with them.
Mr. Cuffe stated today that, “At this stage we are all concerned at
the men’s medical condition. If the Minister for Justice will not
meet them, then a mediator could be appointed to give the men
assurances that they will be treated fairly.
“The men have very practical concerns about their treatment, about
translation services, and fears about being forcibly repatriated to
Afghanistan.
“I hope that if they can receive guarantees of fair treatment from
someone or some body that they can trust that the situation can be
resolved without loss of life.”
