The
new recommendations propose the
re-development of the old Baths, the retention of the Portico and
the development of the coast around the site for amenity activities.
Dún
Laoghaire Green Party TD, Ciarán Cuffe
said, “I am delighted that the sub-committee’s recommendations have
taken into account the views of those people who took to streets to
ensure that this site was developed as public amenity. I hope that
the Dún Laoghaire Rathdown will now produce sufficient funds to
ensure that these new proposals will become a reality. A modest
public amenity on the Baths site would be a real victory for local
democracy”.
“It
is great to see that the Council has taken on board the views
expressed by all those who opposed the privatised, ten-storey
development that had been planned for the site. It is crucial that
important sites in public ownership are developed in such a way that
all the community benefits”.
Dún Laoghaire
Green Party Councillor Kealin Ireland
said, ‘I am very
happy the Committee’s proposals for the Baths site. It is everything
that the public and the Green Party have been calling for years.
It’s certainly a far cry from the ten storey private development
which was proposed only a year ago and which was welcomed with open
arms by so many politicians. How much has changed since then!’
‘The Green Party
has continually stressed the importance of public involvement in
this process; the crucial public consultation process must be
embarked on without any further delay.
“This is a
vindication of all the street protests, the demonstrations, the
voices of opposition raised by thousands of people of the last few
years. All that is required on this site is a modest and public
amenity. It seems, finally, that we are headed in that direction”,
concluded Cllr.
