The Green Party has strongly
criticised plans to introduce car clamping in Dún Laoghaire. At a
well-attended meeting organised by the Dún Laoghaire Business
Association on Wednesday evening, 24th January, the Party gave its
support to the Business Association in its campaign against the
introduction of car clamping in the town. The Green Party has tabled
a motion to Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council calling on the
County Manager to drop any proposal to introduce car-clamping in the
town.
Dún Laoghaire Green Party TD
Ciarán Cuffe stated: “Dún Laoghaire would not benefit from a
draconian traffic enforcement regime. Instead we need a proper
traffic plan for the town to help shoppers find a parking place when
and where they need it.
"If people are accumulating three
or four tickets then we should consider towing those vehicles. We
need some integration between the motor tax office and the parking
fines section so that you can't pay your annual car tax unless
you've paid any outstanding fines. We also want to reform the
Byzantine system that allows for two different types of traffic
wardens, with complicated rules.
"I simply can't understand why the
County Council hasn't been given enough time in the Courts to pursue
those with outstanding tickets.”
Dún Laoghaire Green Party
Councillor Kealin Ireland said:"We need a parking system that
traders, shoppers and residents support. We do not believe that
clamping is required.
"We'd also like to see some simple
issues addressed. People want proper signs put up so that shoppers
know where the parking is. How about 'early-bird' parking for free
before 11 in the morning? Some great new businesses have opened up
over the last year in the heart of Dún Laoghaire. However, their
future success relies on shoppers having access to the centre of the
town.” |
