Green Party calls for halt to work on M3

The Green Party has called for all work to be halted on the construction of the M3 motorway through the Hill of Tara complex. Green Party Environment and Heritage spokesperson Ciaran Cuffe TD said that as far back as March 2005 the Green Party had flagged the project as 'an act of cultural and historic vandalism'.

Deputy Cuffe said: "The recent discovery of a prehistoric circular 'henge' at Lismullen, on the route of the proposed motorway lends further weight to the Green Party's position on the M3. Dr Pat Wallace of the National Museum of Ireland warned the Minister for the Environment Dick Roche in April 2005 that the discovery of sites such as Lismullen was entirely possible, given the Hill of Tara's unique archaeological landscape. The Green Party supports calls for a full excavation of this site.

"The Green Party wants all work on this controversial motorway to come to an end, in particular the massive floodlit Blundelstown interchange. Instead, we are calling for the upgrading of the existing N3 Road. The Green Party in Government will also ensure that the Dublin to Navan rail line is reinstated without delay. Improving public transport will take traffic off the roads and get commuters to work far more quickly."
