Green Party pledges solidarity with Tibet at Dublin March

The Irish Green Party has written to the Chinese ambassador in Ireland Mr. Liu Biwei expressing its grave concern at the treatment of protestors seeking recognition of Tibet. Green Party Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Ciarán Cuffe TD stated that the treatment of protestors in recent days has cast a dark cloud over the preparations for this summer’s Olympic Games in Beijing.

Speaking at the ‘Free Tibet’ March earlier today in Dublin City Centre, Green Party Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Ciarán Cuffe TD stated:

“It is time for the Chinese Government to engage in meaningful dialogue with those who are seeking autonomy for Tibet. The images of monks injured by Chinese security forces focuses our attention on the abuse of human rights in China. Ireland cannot be silent on this issue. A shadow has been cast over the preparations for the Olympic Games in Beijing this summer. I am urging my colleague the Minister for Foreign Affairs Dermot Ahern to continue to raise these concerns at the highest level with the Chinese Government.

“Ireland’s history allows us to clearly understand and empathise with the Tibetan people. If the violence against peaceful protestors continues, Ireland should consider boycotting the opening ceremonies for the games"
