Green Party calls for rethink of new
barrier at Coal Harbour
New car barrier
hindering trawler crews and fish shop customers
The Green Party has called for the Harbour Company to sit down with
the fishing community to resolve the dispute over a new barrier that
stops vehicles from parking on the quay at the Fish Shop at the Coal
Harbour in Dún Laoghaire.
Designed to protect the interests of the crew of the fishing
trawlers that use the pier, it has instead proved a hindrance to
some who have found themselves locked in after hours. Customers to
the fish shop have also complained of the difficulties in accessing
the Fish Shop as the barrier prevents them from driving down the
pier.
Local Green Party TD Ciarán Cuffe said: “I believe the barrier is
clearly creating an access problem for some older and disabled
customers. I would like to see an intercom installed at the barrier
so these customers can park closer to the shop. Many of its
customers are older people who have difficulty in walking down the
pier from their cars. This could also solve the difficulties faced
by those the cars of those who work on the trawlers from being stuck
on the other side of the barrier.
“The Harbour Company should also allow the shop to advertise their
business and to put up signs before the barrier to alert customers
to the new arrangements and to attract new customers.”
Local Green Party Councillor Gene Feighery stated:
“The fish shop is a great Dún Laoghaire institution, and I would
hate to think that the actions of the Harbour Company could cause
problems for them.
We have written to the Harbour Company requesting that they sit down
with all those affected to seek a resolution to this issue.”
