Electric vehicles to recharge on streets of Dun Laoghaire
-New VRT and motor tax changeover to encourage greener driving

Green Party TD for Dún Laoghaire Ciarán Cuffe has welcomed a new initiative by Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council to offer charging facilities for electric vehicles on the streets of the town. The charging facilities will be rolled out over the coming months.

Deputy Cuffe said “I’m delighted this initiative put forward by Green Party Councillors has been adopted. As we’ve seen over the last months, rising fuel costs are having an ever increasing impact on our daily lives. In Ireland, we are 99% depend on imported oil for road transport. I think there is a significant role for electric cars to play in reducing that dependence and for savings on both car running costs and car tax.

“This initiative comes on foot of the new VRT and motor tax regime. From Tuesday 1 July all new vehicles registered in the state will have their VRT and motor tax calculated on an emissions basis. It’s the polluter pays principle in practice: cars that produce higher emissions will pay more, while electric vehicles and lower emitting vehicles will pay less and may even be exempt”

Green Party Cllr Gene Feighery who successfully tabled the motion to have electric charging facilities installed in Dun Laoghaire welcomed the council’s progressive attitude on the issue. “It is vital local Councillors take the lead and ensure that facilities are in place to make the switch to a cleaner and more cost-effective form of transport. We also need to avoid the chicken and egg scenario where the council management say they can't justify putting in charging points until there are enough electric cars on the road.”
