Ceasefire and hostage deal must be first step towards peace

News

The European Green Party welcomes the announcement of a ceasefire and hostage deal to end the genocide in Gaza. After a two-year conflict that has killed tens of thousands, this agreement must lead to a permanent end to the violence. The first urgent step is for humanitarian aid, food, water, medical supplies, and fuel to enter Gaza immediately and without obstruction.

“The European Union and its Member States must now contribute to ensuring that the ceasefire and hostage deal holds. The EU must now play a decisive role, supporting humanitarian and reconstruction efforts, and re-engaging diplomatically to relaunch a credible political process toward a just and lasting peace. Europe must use its influence to ensure accountability for war crimes, respect for international law, and support peace that restores hope and dignity to all civilians in the region. The next priority is to see a genuine peace process leading to the recognition of the Palestinian state, and a two-state solution that ensures justice, security, and dignity for both Palestinians and Israelis”, said Vula Tsetsi, Co-Chair of the European Green Party.

“Millions of people made their voices heard and put pressure on their governments to act, through massive protests and actions. While we welcome this fragile ceasefire, the European Union must reflect on its shamefully slow reaction to the genocide. While this agreement stops the immediate fighting, it doesn't end the root causes of the longer conflict. We still need to see an end to the occupation, the full and irreversible disarmament of militant groups in Gaza, stopping and reversing settlement expansion, and establishing robust international monitoring, including of violence against Palestinians in the West Bank,” said Ciarán Cuffe, Co-Chair of the European Green Party.
