The COP30 agreement offers only vague references to future multilateral initiatives on phasing out fossil fuels, with no binding roadmap, and no clear global commitment, to end coal, oil, and gas.

Vula Tsetsi, Co-Chair of the European Green Party, said:

‘Nobody expected Belém to solve the climate crisis. We dared to hope for a clear global commitment to leave fossil fuels behind. But countries failed to agree to this. COP30 made small steps on adaptation and justice, but it avoided the core of the problem: coal, oil and gas. As long as fossil fuels keep polluting and heating up the planet, people and the planet remain unprotected. Now we need a real global plan to phase out fossil fuels, and Europe must help build it, instead of waiting for others to lead.”

Ciaran Cuffe, Co-Chair of the European Green Party, said:

"What was billed as the 'COP of truth' failed to give a timeline for the phase-out of coal, oil and gas, to keep 1.5°C within reach. There was some positive news including the adoption of the new gender action plan, and a commitment to a roadmap for halting and reversing deforestation by 2030. But Europe must step up by accelerating the phase-out of fossil fuels and scaling renewable energy without delay. The pushback from fossil fuel lobbyists must be resisted. Solar and wind are not only cleaner, they are lowering energy bills, and creating hundreds of  thousands of new jobs in Europe.’
