Davos | Trump’s imperialism shows Europe where nationalism leads

News

Donald Trump has turned the United States into a typical petrostate, with repression at home and imperialism abroad. The rapid evolution of the US under his nationalist MAGA agenda shows European societies exactly where right-wing nationalist and patriotic politics lead, the European Green Party said.

European Green Party Co-Chair Vula Tsetsi said:

‘European leaders must stand united against Trump’s bullying. Trump’s insistence that he will ‘acquire’ Greenland reveal a dangerous nationalistic trajectory, pushing the United States towards a petro-state model, marked by domestic repression and an openly imperial agenda.’
‘We call on all pro-European and democratic forces to act together to defend our values, safeguard Europe’s autonomy, and build a green, self-determined Europe that can uphold international law, defend democracy, and protect people’s rights, including those of the people of Greenland.'
‘Several European right-wing leaders use ultra-nationalist rhetoric and try to stoke culture-wars similar to Trump's MAGA politics: Viktor Orbán (Hungary), Fico (Slovakia), Babiš (Czech Republic), Vučić (Serbia), and Meloni (Italy) - who was the only sitting European leader to attend Trump's inauguration in January 2025. They will have to explain to the Europeans how their friendship with Trump is still compatible with their role in Europe’, Vula Tsetsi said.

Ciarán Cuffe, Co-Chair of the European Green Party, added,

“Trump’s foreign policy is all about oil and intimidation. He has turned to blatant imperialism and colonialism to increase profits for US oil and gas corporations. This is evident in the military intervention in Venezuela to seize control of its oil, the threats to acquire Greenland’s resources, and the withdrawal from key UN climate organizations.'
'Climate action, democracy, and a rules-based world order are not separate struggles; they are two sides of the same coin. Europe’s answer must be energy autonomy built on cheap solar and wind power, energy efficiency, and a strong green industry. The Green Deal and the transition to cheap renewable energy are not just climate policy; they are also a geopolitical necessity for Europe in a world of imperial petrostates’, Ciarán Cuffe concluded.
