European Green Party calls for immediate suspension of the EU-Israel Association Agreement

News

Vula Tsetsi, co-chair of the European Green Party said

“in the face of the dramatic and inhumane situation in Gaza, and the mounting toll of civilian lives — including the deaths of children — there is no time to wait. The European Union has a moral and political responsibility to act immediately to save lives. We therefore call on the European Commission to immediately suspend the EU-Israel Association Agreement. This is possible in line with Article 2, due to the continued and systematic violations of international law and human rights. Especially when it comes to the trade aspect of the Association Agreement, the European Commission has broad powers to act fast. Secondly, we call for an embargo on the exports of arms and equipment used to fuel war in Gaza and the expansion of illegal settlements.”

Ciarán Cuffe, co-chair of the European Green Party added:

“The government of Netanyahu and the military are responsible for the gravest violations of international law and human rights and must be held accountable. We repeat our demands for an immediate and lasting ceasefire, targeted sanctions, and full legal accountability for those responsible for war crimes and the obstruction of humanitarian aid. EU humanitarian aid must be allowed to immediately reach those who are starving, and needs to be scaled up in the coming days. The time for statements has passed. Europe must uphold its legal obligations and its ethical commitments. Civilians are being starved and killed while international law is disregarded with impunity. This cannot continue. The credibility of the European Union, and its commitment to peace and human dignity, depends on its actions now.”
