Greens call for firmer EU response to Trump’s attempts to dismantle Europe

News

Following their successful party congress in Lisbon, Portugal, the European Greens called for a stronger response from the European institutions to the new US National Security Strategy - which targets the European project and has been openly welcomed by both the Kremlin and the Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orbán.

Ciarán Cuffe, Co-Chair of the European Green Party, said:

'The fact that the Trump administration has officially declared its support for the enemies of the European Union is of an unprecedented gravity for a country that is supposed to be an ally of Europe. Trump is attempting to break up the European Union, taking a leaf straight out of the Kremlin’s playbook. The US is acting more like a corporate lobbyist than a defender of democracy and the rule of law. Failing to affirm support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity aligns more closely with Putin’s war of aggression than with Zelensky’s pursuit of peace. Europe must answer this challenge with political courage. The European Commission must continue to defend the EU’s digital rules and stand up to Trump’s ‘commercial diplomacy’.
'Europeans are proud of a European Union that delivers social protection, labour rights and environmental protection to hundreds of millions of people. We are proud of our holiday entitlements, days off work when ill, and parental leave. We defend Europe’s role in tackling the climate crisis rather than surrendering to corporate interests', Ciarán Cuffe added.

Vula Tsetsi, Co-Chair of the European Green Party, said:

“The new US strategy openly targets the European project. Donald Trump is activating his far-right allies, Orbán, Meloni, the AfD and others, to weaken and dismantle the EU, in full contempt of democracy and the international order. This is a wake-up call for all pro-European democrats. And we appeal to the European People's Party (EPP) to put an end to the normalisation of the extreme right. No more ambiguity, no more double games, no more tactical cooperation with forces working to erode Europe from within. At this moment of danger, Europe and democracy demand a clear choice.”
'Europe must now answer with courage and ambition: reinforce its social foundations, lead on climate action, secure digital sovereignty, and build an autonomous European security policy. The Union must also end the unanimity rule that allows Trojan horses like Orbán and others to paralyse Europe at decisive moments. As European Greens, we believe the strongest response to Trump is a Federal European Union and a more resilient Europe - from Lisbon to Tbilisi. Therefore, unity and action cannot wait', Vula Tsetsi concluded.
