"At the Congress of the European Green Party in Lisbon, Portugal, one message was heard again and again: Across Europe, rents are too high, homes are unaffordable, and young people are locked out of housing altogether. Housing is the number one concern for many people, especially young people trying to live independently.
We Greens think that no one should be priced out of their city, or forced to choose between paying rent and heating their home. Europe must stop talking and start acting. We call on the Commission to deliver truly affordable housing, not market fixes. Public and cooperative housing must come first. All housing investment must support the Green Deal and deliver homes that are energy-efficient, climate-ready and socially fair. EU oversight must be stronger so national and local authorities deliver this plan properly and transparently. The Greens will closely monitor progress and push for bold action at the EU Housing Summit in 2026. Housing is a European challenge and it needs a European response that leaves no one behind."
European Green Party Co-Chair Ciarán Cuffe added:
“Cities are ready to act, but they need EU support. It is good that the Commission seeks to increase supply, tackle short-term rentals and help those impacted by the housing crisis. However tackling homelessness must be an immediate priority. I welcome the focus on training and apprenticeship programmes as we need more skilled construction workers to deliver on this plan.
“The proposed revision of State aid rules for housing is a positive step, but action is also needed to limit the financialisation of housing which is driving up prices and leading to ‘renovictions’. The housing market must prioritise people over profit. The Commission’s proposal must be the start of a fairer housing system in Europe - one that gives people security, dignity and a fairer future".
