European Green Party Co-Chair Vula Tsetsi stated:
"The fact that the police are requesting to indict the Green Mayor of Budapest Gergely Karácsony for supporting Budapest Pride 2025 is a shocking misuse of state power by the Orbán regime. In ensuring Pride could take place, Mayor Karácsony was ensuring equality, diversity, and human rights in Budapest.
Viktor Orbán's attempt to silence the voices of freedom and democracy is a shameful abuse of power. When Orbán sees a peaceful Pride march as a threat, it shows that he is clinging to power ahead of the upcoming Hungarian elections. This is not an isolated case, it is part of a wider pattern of Orbán’s intimidation and state repression - something that must concern all Europeans.”
European Green Party Co-Chair Ciarán Cuffe stated:
"Budapest Pride was a moment of hope and optimism for people who support equality for LGBTQI+ people in Hungary and around Europe. Gergely Karácsony has our full support. The European Green Party calls on all democratic forces to stand with Karácsony. And it is time for the European institutions to decisively stand up against Viktor Orbán’s deepening authoritarianism. The European institutions must never accept any European government restricting freedom of assembly, expression, and the right to be who you are.”
Gergely Karácsony and his party, Párbeszéd - A Zöldek Pártja, are members of the European Green Party. He was listed by Politico Europe as one of the 10 to Watch in 2026.
The Hungarian police proposed to charge Gergely Karácsony with ”violation of the freedom of assembly law”, after he ensured the freedom of assembly for the LGBTQI+ community in Hungary. But since the March 2025 vote of Fidesz (Patriots.eu) amendments to the law on freedom of assembly, this law forbids any public assembly related to LGBTQI+ rights in Hungary.
